Where is Buddha?

A monk asked Master Xuěfēng Yìcún (雪峰義存):

"Master, where can I find the Way? Where is Buddha?"

Xuěfēng gazed into the distance.

"Do you see the sky?" he asked.

The monk nodded.

"Do you see the mountains? The rivers? The birds gliding in the wind?"

"Yes, Master."

"All of that—the entire universe, the whole world—that is you.

Do you think there is anything else?"

The monk lowered his gaze, but his brow remained furrowed.

Then Xuěfēng continued:

"That is why it is said in the Sutra of Heroic Progress:

'People lose themselves because they chase after things.

If they were to turn it around, they would be nothing other than Buddha himself.'"

The monk raised his head, wanting to ask something.

But Xuěfēng merely raised his hand— as if holding a mirror,

in which the monk saw nothing but himself.
